You probably have been struggling to increase your milk supply at least once as a breastfeeding mother.
In some situations, you just don’t know what happened, have you done something wrong or not, but your milk supply goes too low and pumping doesn’t help.
It’s not the end of the world, you just need to mobilize your efforts and focus on a mission of increasing low milk supply in the next 48 hours. It’s totally doable, let me give you the simple tips which work really great.

1. Drink a lot of water to increase milk supply
To produce more milk, your body needs extra fluids, so make sure that you drink at least a glass of water or other liquid every hour of the day (!) No need to wake up in the middle of the night to drink more 🙂 This might sound a little crazy, but it’s the way you can boost your milk supply fast. If you go to the bathroom and your pee doesn’t have very light color, that’s because you are not drinking enough water.
When you think of diversifying your drinks because having just water every hour can be too boring and probably is not as healthy as it seems (water washes away minerals from your body). You can drink juices and other liquids, but be careful not to intake too many calories with them, and watch out for caffeine if you like coffee and tea – you can have not more than two cups of these in a day, otherwise, your baby’s sleep will be affected.
A side note here. When you have to drink a lot of water, most probably you are driving your body to electrolytes imbalance. This is not just a fancy term, it’s a real condition many people live it without knowing it. When your electrolytes are going too low, you start feeling light-headed and nauseous.

2. Try Let There Be Milk

One thing worth a warning here is that the taste of the liquid is quite strong. Well, for some mommies it’s too strong, let’s be honest. So, if you want to avoid this delight, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to put the dropper deep into your mouth, almost to the throat, to avoid dropping it to your tongue.
I wanted to add here that since this post was published, a number of my readers notified me that this product is out of stock on Amazon. Well, on one side that’s great because it means the drops are really efficient. On the other side, when you need to buy them urgently to increase your milk supply within 48 hours, what is the alternative?
So, I found another brand which seems to make a very similar product, the ingredients are basically the same, just the marshmallow extract is missing in Motherlove More Milk.
Mother’s Milk Tea
A friend of mine who stays at home now with a new baby recommended this product as well – Mother Milk Tea might have a little weird name, but the ingredients are just what you need.
You get with it fennel and coriander, it’s a totally non-GMO herbal supplement. When you are having this tea (you can have it every morning), you can add a little of honey to make the taste better. Drinking more than one cup of this tea a day is not recommended.
Fenugreek
This inexpensive product can be on your list for high milk supply not only when your supply went really low. You can take 3 capsules a day for starters, and then reduced the dose a bit to continue taking this supplement throughout all your breastfeeding period.
What foods help produce breast milk?
You need to eat carrots, spinach salads, oatmeal, and hummus. If you need to help produce your breast milk faster, focus on eating these foods for the next 2 days. I think oatmeal for breakfast is always a great idea, salads with spinach and carrots are not only a way to increase milk supply, but also very good to keep your weight under control.
You can also add to your daily meals the following products for milk supply boost:
- Basil
- Salmon
- Apricots
- Beet leaves
- Cumin
- Asparagus
- Barley
- Almonds
- Sweet potatoes
What causes a decrease in milk supply?
Even if the mommy and the baby are perfectly healthy and nothing should interfere with the breastfeeding process, some potential causes for a low milk supply are quite frequent:
- Breaks in nursing. If you had to travel urgently for a couple of days, even if you stored enough for your baby, the supply and demand process has been interrupted. Your body produces milk as a response to nursing.
- You baby likes bottle better. This happens when you had to give your baby the bottle a few times, and since it’s way more easy to extract milk from a bottle, your baby is choosing the bottle.
- Being too punctual is not for breastfeeding. Let’s get back to supply and demand concept. Your baby gets hungry without alarms – and you need to feed at whenever the demand occurs. I know this can be hard to implement, but increased milk supply will be the well-deserved reward for your efforts.

Great post! Fenugreek can lower some women’s supply too just a heads up! I was blessed with a great supply so I never tried any supplements but food and water!
