What are the different types of waffles?
If you need something sweet yet fulfilling to the tummy, then you may want to consider getting a waffle (or two). To put it simply, a waffle is a dish made from batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned (or a waffle maker) which gives it a distinct texture. Waffles can be eaten on its own or with various toppings and sauces. And yes, there are different types of waffles you can enjoy such as:
- Belgian waffle or Brussels waffle – this is a light and crispy waffle with a honeycomb-like surface which is often served as a dessert waffle. You can sprinkle this with some chocolate syrup or whipped cream and add some toppings such as bananas, strawberries, and nuts.
- Liège waffle – also considered as Belgium’s equivalent to a doughnut, this type of waffle is much richer and sweeter than the Brussels waffle and is often eaten as a snack. It features chunks of caramelized sugar.
- American waffle – this is a type of waffle that is leavened with baking powder instead of yeast. You can serve an American waffle with sugar or sweet toppings, and can be served as a base for entrees.
- Egg waffle – also known as Hong Kong waffle, an egg waffle is mostly sold as street food, and is drizzled with peanut butter and sugar, and usually filled with fruits.
- Potato waffle – To put it simply, potato waffles are waffle-shaped version of potato pancakes.
- Pizzelle – also considered as a waffle cookie that originated from Italy. It has the texture and looks of a flat, crispy cookie that is sometimes sprinkled with sugar.
