Can you do a keto diet without dairy products?
If you are on a weight loss journey, then I am sure you have considered a keto diet. To put it simply, keto is a low-carb, high-fat diet that is designed to eliminate almost all carbs and burn fat.
But aside from weight loss, there are also numerous benefits a keto diet can offer including boosting one’s heart health, controlling blood sugar levels, and more.
However, most keto diet rely heavily on butter, cheese, and cream for flavor in their food, and if you are someone who has either dairy allergy or is lactose intolerant, then this might pose a problem for you.
With this, you may want to avoid butter, cheese, milk, heavy cream, curds, yogurt, and the likes.
But you do not need to worry because you can still start a dairy-free keto diet. A dairy-free keto diet is actually popular nowadays because some people find that they lose weight faster when they avoid dairy.
Moreover, some people also find that dairy causes some negative reactions to their skin such as persistent acne.
So, yes, you can do a dairy-free keto diet since you can still get plenty of calcium with some dairy alternatives, and cream and butter is not a necessity on a keto diet!
What can I eat on a dairy-free keto diet?
Since you are already aware of what to avoid when going on a dairy-free keto diet, you may now want to have a comprehensive list of foods you can eat.
Do not worry because even without dairy, you can still get your needed dose of vitamins and nutrients with these food groups:
- Red meat, poultry, and seafood such as ground beef, chicken thighs, salmon, sardines, liver, etc. but do try to stick with organic and 100% grass-fed meat as well as wild-caught fish as much as possible
- Superfoods such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach
- Plant-based oils like coconut oil and olive oil
- Healthy animal fats such as duck fat, bacon, and tallow
- Leafy greens
- Low-carb fruits such as avocados, berries, and citrus fruits
- Nuts and seeds – fattier nuts like macadamias, almonds, and pecans are much preferred
If you are going to buy some boxed or canned foods at your nearest grocery store, it is still best to look at the ingredients list even if the can or box claims that they are dairy-free.
